Here are 5 Things You can Do Today to Look 22… Again! (Or at least feel that way!)

Life is Sweet TV interviewed Dr. Katy Burris, Dermatologist at the North Shore-LIJ Health System.

Here’s Dr. Burris’ top 5 tips to looking good at every age. Your fountain of youth awaits!

1.YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT, (And DRINK) REALLY! (Your skin will thank you!)

Dr. Burris: “Women need to focus on what they’re ingesting. I’m often asked the question, “Am I drinking enough water, is it something that I’m eating?” To maintain an overall youthful appearance, you really need to focus on what you’re ingesting and making sure that you are consuming enough water and that you’re also consuming antioxidant rich foods and beverages –things such as green tea, making sure you consuming your antioxidants in the form of fruits and even a little bit of dark chocolate. Because these antioxidants are very important to combat the oxidant stresses from the environment and the damage that’s done to the cells by aging, stress, smoking, the sun, uv rays etc.

You want to do a high antioxidant diet, eating your fruits, especially your richly colored fruits that are high in antioxidants, such as blueberries, pomegranate,

drinking enough water and limiting your caffeine intake because you don’t want to dehydrate your skin– you want to hydrate your skin. A dehydrated appearance is going to be more sallow, where something that hydrated is going to look plump and dewey and radiant.”

2. PRACTICE SAFE SUN

Dr. Burris: “Wear a sunscreen from April to November and then wear a moisturizer with an SPF from December to March.”

3. VITAMIN D:

Talk to your doctor about a vitamin D supplement.

Dr. Burris: “So the important thing to remember to encourage and restore your youthful face is taking vitamin D supplements. Now that you’re avoiding the sun at all costs or limiting the sun exposure, we have to make sure we’re ingesting enough vitamin D because the sun is a source of most people’s source of vitamin D in conjunction with milk and vitamin D supplements. Vitamin D supplements are essential to support all the bones of your body, and especially those of your face. The bones in your face are the foundation of your appearance, so if we focus on maintaining the strength of the bones in our face, then it will support all the fat and the muscle and everything that keeps us looking young.”

4. USE A RETINOID:

Dr. Burris: “Retinoids are pretty popular now., There are over the counter retinoids and prescription retinoids and there are many benefits. They treat surface fine lines and wrinkles, brown spots. They also can help thicken the skin and also importantly preventing skin cancers such as basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers.

Talk to your dermatologist about which ones to use and how often and certain side effects associated with them. I can’t strongly advise enough AGAINST using during pregnancy . That is definitely a time where you NOT going to want to use a retinoid.”

5. AVOID THIS! COMMON SKIN CARE MISTAKES THAT AGE US.:

Dr. Burris:”One of the things that certainly ages people is the overuse of makeup. Just the use of tinted moisturizer, if you can get by with a tinted moisturizer that has an spf in it, is sometimes much more youthful appearing than using heavy foundation and powder. Certain mistakes that we make, of course– not exercising enough, not getting enough sleep, OVER washing your face. Sometimes people don’t realize the importance of not over washing your face and making sure you are moisturizing your face.

The more you wash your face, the face is going to be stimulated to produce more oil.

Wash once in the morning and making sure you take off that makeup at night and washing your face at night– that’s all you need.”
