This week, I was honored to present “Sweet Storytelling Success” to an inspiring group of non-profit fundraising professionals on Long Island. My program helps organizations and businesses learn to best tell their stories, build their brands, and get great press.
Just some of the big hearted organizations represented in attendance at the Association of Fundraising Professionals LI Chapter event: The Ronald McDonald House of LI; Mercy Haven; The Society of St. Vincent de Paul– just to name a few.
As I looked around the room, I realized I was looking out from the podium and seeing my favorite kind of story as a journalist, a storyteller:
I was seeing with my own eyes– literally– what a room full of goodness looks like.
In my mind, THAT was the story of the day. THAT was the headline that would leave me with the biggest impact.
THIS was what goodness looks like.
They were the people who do the extraordinary every day; who make the world a little better every day.. by helping others.
And it is a reminder of how to tell the greatest stories and one of the most important storytelling lessons of the day.
The most compelling stories are about people. People doing the everyday and the extraordinary. The stories that have the most impact are the stories with heart.
Stories that inspire, educate, inform.. And entertain us too.
Stories that move us… And that stay with us.
Storytelling is a powerful gift. And we all have the ability to tell life’s greatest stories. Sometimes we just have to pause and look around. And see the goodness (and the great story) that is right in front of us.
