Sweet! With the Rangers legends at The 2012 Winter Classic

I am a New Yorker in a sea of orange. It isn’t easy being a NY fan in Philadelphia. Sure the rivalry between the Rangers and the Flyers is legendary but this was a moment in hockey history to be savored on both sides. And as the alumni greats from both teams took to the ice at the 2012 Winter Classic Alumni Game, the electricity in the crowd could have melted the 20 thousand gallons of water needed to create the Winter Classic’s ice!

Rangers legends…Mark Messier, Brian Leetch, Adam Graves, Ron Greschner, Darius Kasparaitis, Ron Duguay, Dave Maloney, Stephane Matteau, John Vanbiesbrouck….

On the Flyers side…Bernie Parent, Mark Howe, Bob Clarke, Eric Lindros….just to name a few.

The greats looked great. A little wiser perhaps, a little grayer for some. And its amazing how those uniforms can hide a few extra pounds. (It’s a good thing that this wasn’t a reunion of the world’s top Sports Illustrated Supermodels…)

So much talent, so much history skating all on one rink. And so many amazing memories for the fans and the greats alike.

In the locker room after the game, I had the chance to speak with Mark Messier, Ron Greschner, Ron Duguay, John Vanbiesbrouck, Mathieu Schnieder, Dan Blackburn…

What was it like to take the ice one more time? What were the emotions and thoughts going through their heads as they slipped on their old jerseys and skated on to the ice in front of 44 thousand fans?

Did the old uniforms still fit? Were there butterflies? What was the single greatest moment on the ice? How did they train for the big event? And just how sore were they after the game???

These questions and more..and the one on one interviews coming soon in the video.

Oh, by the way…the final score: 3-1 Flyers.

But it was a win win for hockey and the fans.

Yes…these guys still got it!
